Product Hunt Launch Checklist: The 12 Things That Actually Matter

A minimal PH launch checklist based on what separates top-10 launches from buried ones in 2026.

Most Product Hunt posts flop for the same 12 reasons. Here's the shortest checklist that materially moves results.

## Before the launch day

1. Hunter or self-hunt? In 2026, self-hunts perform as well as hunter-led launches for products with an existing audience, and worse without. If you have under 500 Twitter/X followers, ask a hunter. 2. Thumbnail — the single highest-leverage asset. Bold type, one clear visual, 240×240 rendered, checked for scroll-feed legibility. 3. Gallery — 4-6 screenshots. First is the hero. Last is a specific outcome screen (before/after, result, pricing). 4. Tagline — 60 chars max. Concrete benefit, not a category. 5. Description — one paragraph. Problem-solution-differentiator. 6. Maker comment — written, drafted, ready to paste at 00:01. Not optional.

## Launch day (first 4 hours decide the day)

7. Time the post — 00:01 PT on your chosen day. Earlier bleeds votes; later gets buried behind the 00:01 cohort. 8. Upvote request — to your existing audience only. Never "vote swap" groups; PH detects and de-ranks. 9. Reply to every comment within 10 minutes for the first 4 hours. This is a ranking signal. 10. Twitter/X thread — pinned, with the PH link. Includes the problem, a GIF of the product, and the ask. 11. Newsletter send — to people who opted in. Not a cold list. 12. Launch-day support channel — an email you check every 20 minutes, or Discord, or Intercom. A broken first-click on launch day is a deal-killer.

## The ratio that matters

Top-10 products in 2026 averaged 1 maker reply per 3 upvotes in the first 4 hours. If you're getting upvotes but not replies, you're not engaging the audience you already have — you're attracting drive-bys. Slow down and reply.

## What doesn't matter (much)

Spending money on PH ads, paying for "launch services," writing 10 competitor reply comments, posting at "optimal" times beyond 00:01 PT, elaborate animated thumbnails. Nice to have, not predictive of placement.

## The core insight

Product Hunt is a concentration event, not a discovery event. You are not finding new users — you are focusing your existing audience's attention so the PH community notices. If you don't have an audience, spend three weeks building one before launching. A cold PH launch averages 30 upvotes. A launch to a 2,000-person email list averages 400.

The 12 items above are the minimum. Anything extra is bonus.
